Fraser Island
It is easy to see why the local Aborigines who lived on Fraser Island for over 5,500 years call Fraser 'K'gari', which means paradise.
The realisation that you really are visiting one of the most unique places on earth might just come to you as you stand dwarfed beneath a canopy of towering rainforest trees, thousands of years old and growing only in sand.
It could strike you as you dive into the cool, clear waters of spectacular Lake McKenzie - a gorgeous blue porthole framed by pure white sand.
Or it may just take hold as fresh salt air batters your face as you drive along the beach, which stretches for over 100 kilometres punctuated only by fresh rivullets from creeks, searching for that perfect picnic or fishing spot.
Fraser Island, located just over an hour by road and barge from Maryborough, is the largest sand island in the world and the only place on earth where rainforests grown on sand.
This unique natural wonder has more than 40 pristine freshwater lakes, swampy wetlands, towering cliffs of multi-coloured sands, beautiful rock pools and prolific wildlife and flora.
